I had hoped to have some kids help me deliver cranes this week, but found out late last week some news that changed the plan.  The Bezo Foundation announced that they, like our class, had far exceed their goal.  The local foundation had set out to collect 100,000 cranes, raising a total of $200,000 for the Japan Rebuild Project.  As of Friday, 460,535 cranes had been delivered to their Seattle office!  The foundation announced that they would not be accepting any cranes mailed after Friday, so I sent off the 1,250 they were expecting from our school team.  The cranes will be included in an art installation included in the Rebuild project.  Jack and I are rushing the other 2,398 cranes to an OshKosh store this morning.  OshKosh is collecting up to 50,000 cranes at their stores, which they will match with articles of clothing for kids in Japan.  I am guessing that this challenge will be met with as much love and support as the Bezo challenge, so we are going to hurry!

Today is the last day of our Cranes for Japan project, and we have 3,648 cranes!!!  Lots of families have been making cranes at home.  It is fun to do and a good thing to do as a family.  Isabella's family has been making cranes, and bringing them in each time they make 100.  On Tuesday, Gabe's family surprised the class by bringing in 1,455 cranes that they have been making at home since the beginning of the project.  Gabe's aunt and grandma made most of the cranes, but the whole family helped.

Next week, during Spring Break, Mrs. Cryan Leary will be delivering the cranes to the Bezo Foundation.  Each crane will earn $2 for the Japan Rebuild project the foundation is sponsoring.  All of our hard work on this project is going to send $7,296 for the kids in Japan!!!  We are really proud of ourselves.

Folding, folding, folding
Paper cranes is easy and fun

The number is going up 100 each day!  In the 5 school days this week, we have made 500 cranes!  The legend we learned from reading, "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" says that if you make 1000 paper cranes, your wish will come true.  Our wish is that nobody else in Japan will be hurt and that those hurt by the earthquake and tsunami will have more food and enough clothes and safe houses and will start to heal.

Our goal is still to make 1,250 cranes so we still need to make 250 more next week.  By next Wednesday we should be totally done.  Issac (a 3rd grader) and his family donated 1,000 really small paper cranes.  They are hung in a chain over the lights in the hallway.  They kinda look like a sea-serphant dragon's body.

Our class is reading and writing poetry and we wrote a haiku about the cranes.

We have been making cranes for 10 days and we have already made over 500!   We are hanging the cranes outside of our classroom.  Each string has 25 cranes on it and there are over 20 strings.  There are 250 cranes on each side.

At Monday Morning Assembly, Eva E., Julia, Ruby and Bella told the school about our project and asked for help.  Lots of kids and parents have helped already.  Today, we taught some of our Kindergarten reading buddies how to make the cranes.

An Interview With Mr. Jeffrey Riley, QAE Librarian

This is an article about Dreambox, Brain Pop, and Type To Learn4.  These are super fun computer learning games.  We interviewed our librarian Mr. Jeffrey to find information about these awesome games! You can play them at home and at school.

Dreambox is a good math learning game because it’s hard in a fun way.  You can log on at home or school for free.   On a school computer, go to library catalog, at the top you will see visual search, click on that, then click on “Math.”  Next, click on the Dreambox link for your class, then click on your own name and there you are!   At home go to www.qmlibrary.org, then click on links, then click on Dreambox, click on your teachers name to get to your account. Mr. Jeffrey said that one reason Dreambox is popular is because after every level you get a reward.  

Brain Pop is a science-learning program that shows short movies on a lot of different subjects, like soil or money or technology.  Then it gives a fun quiz.  Brain Pop is awesome but it’s only free until 5:00pm on weekdays.  It costs $30 for a home subscription so you can play after 5 and on weekends.  To log onto Brain Pop, go to www.qmlibrary.com and click onto Brain Pop or go straight to www.brainpop.com.  Your user name is queenael and your password is brainpop.

Type to learn 4 is a cool program that teaches you how to keyboard and it will take you on special typing adventures! To download, go to Mr. Jeffrey’s blog at qmlibrary.org and click on the Type to Learn 4 link.  The password is your school name—ours is queenanneelementary. The login is Lincoln, then type your first name and last initial.  The first time you play, you need to enter the activation code.  It is 122459.  Mr. Jeffrey said, “Type To Learn 4 is important because you are the kids of tomorrow! You’ll be using keyboarding instead of writing to communicate with people all over the world!!!”    

So, that’s how you log onto all three programs.  Have fun playing learning games!
